The Bible teaches us that we are designed for personal interconnectivity through meaningful relationships. We are told to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), to empathize by rejoicing with those who rejoice and to weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15), and to always love one another (John 12:34-35). Personal connection is essential to fulfilling these commands.
In contrast to this teaching, many are living increasingly isolated lives. Whether the cause is related to social media, anxiety, self-centeredness, or other factors, some are intentionally choosing to cast off personal relationships that do not meet their own desires. In the article, “Relationship Minimalism? Why Downsizing Other People Won’t Make You Happy,” John Stonestreet and Shane Morris describe this dangerous form of isolationism and explain that it will lead to unexpected sorrow.
