On Thursday, March 12, we announced that classes would be cancelled for the week of March 16-20. The plan was for teachers to spend the week preparing for distance learning in the event that on-campus classes could not be held following spring break (March 23-30). Childcare was made available for those who needed it.

On Monday, March 16, President Trump encouraged us to avoid groups of 10 or more people, and our Governor requested schools to close as soon as possible. As a result, we announced that our childcare services for this week would end today, Tuesday, March 17, and our teachers’ last day of on-campus professional development for distance learning would also end today. We informed parents that our campus would be closed indefinitely starting Wednesday, March 18, and we communicated that any students who needed textbooks or other materials from school to come to campus at retrieve those items.

Currently, we have not set a date to return to on-campus classes or when to begin offering childcare again. As of today, we are planning to begin distance learning on Tuesday, March 31. If this changes, we will share that update as quickly as possible.

Approaches to distance learning will vary by age group and by subject area. Teachers of students in grades 1-12 will be using Google Classroom to communicate what students need to do concerning their lessons. To facilitate this, we have created Google accounts (with a Berean Academy email address) for each student in those grades. Parents will receive information by email or regular mail concerning how to complete the Google registration process.

Questions regarding school-issued Google accounts should be directed to class sponsors. If class sponsors are not available during spring break, questions should be sent to Mr. Harmon (harmonj@bereanacademy.net).

Kindergarten teachers are not planning to use Google Classroom; they plan to use Class Tag as their primary method of communicating academic information to families.

Our teachers are doing an amazing job preparing to teach in new ways. They will work at home for the remainder of this week continuing to ready themselves for the challenge of distance teaching. More information concerning our approach to distance learning will be shared as we approach its implementation.
